SEC: un finale che vale una… finale
Lo ammetto, questa stagione di college football non mi sta esaltando. Sarà perché da amante della Big Ten vengo tradito proprio dalla conference che più seguo e non perché la tremenda SEC sta spazzando via le rivali del “girone” più antico d’America ma proprio perché, all’interno stesso del torneo, le delusioni non sono poche. Ohio State fatica più che mai mentre il talento di Terrelle Pryor rimane imbrigliato ad un attacco poco fantasioso e con pochi mezzi, un attacco che evidenzia i limiti di Jim Tressel nel costruire un gioco offensivo credibile e nel gestire una formazione collegiale dove, dopo gli ottimi reclutamenti, sembra piantarsi quando era di far fruttare i dividendi di tanti investimenti.
A Columbus il numero dei detrattori ha ormai superato quello dei fan accaniti, dopo che l’head coach era diventato un quasi intoccabile per aver riportato il titolo nazionale in Ohio dai tempi del mitico Woody Hayes. Tre Fiesta Bowl ed un Alamo Bowl in 4 anni, un dominio quasi incontrastato contro la grande rivale Michigan tra cui la vittoria nella partita più importante, uno scontro tra i più memorabili che mai si ricorderanno all’interno della serie tra le due università. Stagione 2006, a Columbus si affrontano Buckeyes e Wolverines da imbattuti e OSU la spunta 42-39 dopo una sfida memorabile fatta di rimonte tentate, fughe ed inseguimenti. Per la prima volta le due squadre si affrontavano occupando i primi due posti del rancking e Tressel vinse in un colpo solo la Big Ten, la gara più “pesante” nella storia della rivalità e l’accesso alla finale per il titolo.
Oggi gli si contesta una gestione pessima, in una stagione dove ha già 2 sconfitte e dove Pryor, appunto, non riesce ad emergere dopo che, due anni fa, al suo arrivo, qualcuno lo definì “il miglior giocatore mai passato da Columbus”. Chi ha sbagliato?
Stenta anche Penn State, e domina Iowa, rivelazione della stagione in Big Ten in una stagione dove le favorite tra le “Undici Grandi” sembrano capvolgersi dando spazio all’inatteso gruppo degli Hawkeyes. Il resto è un domino più o meno annunciato e ora che Oklahoma è uscita dalla Top 25 Sam Bradford sembra deciso a farsi operare alla spalla per risolvere un infortunio che, probabilmente, è la prima causa del crollo dei Sooners.
Nel solito assurdo giro di votazioni in un torneo senza playoff, siamo entrati nella settimana dove Florida risulta #1 nel BCS, mentre Alabama lo è per la Associated Press. Colpa dell’ultima partita, dove i Gators hanno faticato più del previsto. A farsi però grasse risate è Texas, al #3, che comunque si voglia vedere il bicchiere attende la finale del titolo di SEC. Le prime tre squadre del ranking hanno ottime possibilità di terminare imbattute e, se così fosse, la finale di conference regalerebbe alla vincente un posto al National Championship. L’altra, inevitabilmente, lascerebbe il secondo posto ai Longhorns. Stranezze d i un voto che pesa spesso più del giudizio del campo, in un torneo dove anche le conference gestiscono tutto a modo loro tanto che alcune hanno più partite in calendario ed una finale per il titolo che… in altre conference semplicemente non c’è.
