Indy aspetta gennaio

Chi non ha pensato alla finale di AFC del 2006 rivedendo l’ultima sfida tra Patriots e Colts alzi la mano. Non mi riferisco ovviamente solo al fatto di aver visto Indianapolis recuperare un punteggio piuttosto disperato, o al come sono andate le cose, ma alla sensazione di aver visto nei Colts la spinta di voler cambiare il corso della storia (ovviamente con la “s” minuscola).

Altra partita, altra sfida, altra posta in palio, ma Indianapolis è oggi 9-0 e Peyton Manning assapora, da vicino, una delle ultime grandi possibilità di staccare il fratellino in fatto di anelli vinti e di mettersi a disposizione dell’Olimpo definitivo degli eroi del gioco.

I Colts visti nelle ultime 3-4 settimane non hanno sempre brillato, anzi, ed hanno spesso palesato difetti che non sono consoni a chi deve puntare davvero a un viaggio nella Terra promessa; eppure questi Colts non sembrano quelli che con Tony Dungy infilavano di volta in volta una serie infinita di vittorie per poi crollare sul più bello. Anzi, questa loro “umanità”, questo loro essere distanti dalla eprfezione li rende, a mio modo di vedere, più pericolosi del solito.

Gennaio si avvicina, i Colts potrebbero arrivarci col fattore campo (che li terrebbe eventualmente lontani dalle gelate di Boston o Pittsburgh, ad esempio) e come sfida nel Divisional potrebbero trovarsi di fronte a squadre toste ma inesperte, come Cincinnati o Denver, entrambe in piena corsa per i playoff. Dall’altra parte, se mai si arrivasse al Super Bowl (so che sono già troppo avanti) tra le favorite contiamo di nuovo squadre con pochi gettoni spesi in post-season, squadre come Minnesota e New Orleans. E, in quel di gennaio, un certo curriculum fa spesso la differenza.

Siamo d’accordo, se faticavano ai tempi di Dungy, a giocarsi i playoff, perché dovrebbero sorprendere ora che appaiono meno forti? E’ vero, ma è proprio questo essere visti come incompleti che negli ultimi anni ha fatto la differenza. Sapere di dover dare il 101% per saltarci fuori perché la convinzione di essere primi sulla carta non può esistere nemmeno in sogno, è quella molla che ha spinto molti oltre l’ostacolo. Preparare bene le strategie, alzare la difesa ad un livello superiore e poi lasciarsi trascinare dall’uomo in più, in questo caso Peyton Manning.

E’ accaduto coi Giants due anni fa, con Arizona lo scorso anno, fermatasi a una manciata di secondi dal titolo dopo una secolare tradizione di sconfitte. Quest’anno il nome è più “grosso”, l’ultimo titolo dei Colts è di tre stagioni fa, ma Manning tutto quanto detto sopra lo sa. E sa che ha battuto i Pats quando non contava ma dando grande lezione, insieme ai compagni, di come questa squadra possa uscire anche dalle sabbie mobili.

Alla fine per vincere serve anche crederci, benché mi sembri ovvio che il consenso vada strappato anche a Tom Brady e compagnia.
