Tacchino e football
Il giovedì probabilmente più bello dell’anno. Per gli americani il giorno del Ringraziamento, con un po’ di football (un po’, si fa per dire, è un po’ tanto), per gli appassionati del resto del mondo solo palla ovale. Classica sfida a Detroit (contro Green Bay, ore 18.30 italiane) e a Dallas (contro Oakland, 22.15) le due città che, da decenni, hanno diritto di ospitare l’evento durante il Thanksgiving Day (Thanksgiving Classic, per l’appunto). Da qualche anno poi, precisamente dall’avvento di Nfl Network, una terza partita aggiuntiva da trasmettere sul canale della Lega.
A differenza delle altre due sfide, che come detto hanno sempre la squadra ospitante “fissa”, la terza partita (ore 2.20 italiane) cambia ogni anno. Questa volta tocca a Denver-NY Giants, si gioca al Mile High e propone la sfida tra due squadre partite fortissimo e poi scontratesi con grossi problemi e tante batoste. E’ una serata “playoff” e ci sono un minimo di 12 ore di football da vedersi tutte d’un fiato. Serata playoff perché Green Bay deve vincere per tenere in piedi le speranze di una wild card in Nfc, mentre Dallas e NY Giants si sfidano a distanza per proseguire la corsa al titolo divisionale, unica vera garanzia di qualificazione.
Favoriti i Packers e i Cowboys, i Giants avranno di fronte una Denver che dopo la sconfitta con San Diego si ritrova in una situazione che mai avrebbe immaginato un mese fa, ossia quella di inseguire i Chargers, ora a 7-3, mentre i Broncos sono 6-4 dopo il 6-0 iniziale.
Torniamo un attimo all’evento del Ringraziamento in sé, il football giocato in questa giornata è un po’ ovunque, ci sono “classiche” di high school, di college, ed anche i cosiddetti Turkey Bowl, organizzati da gente comune che prima del rientro a casa si dedica al flag football (o simili) senza tanto badare a clima, temperatura o altro (sono detti anche Turkwy Bowl, o Turkey Game Day le sfide tradizionali del football liceale giocate in questo giorno). Ai tempi della AFL si giocava una partita durante questa ricorrenza esattamente come succedeva per la NFL ma, dopo la fusione, soltanto Detroit (sin dal 1920, anno di nascita della Nfl) e Dallas (1960) mantennero il diritto di ospitare la gara. Lamar Hunt, storico fondatore dei Kansas City Chiefs, si è battuto per anni affinché la sua squadra potesse ospitare di nuovo una gara per il Ringraziamento.
Ci riuscì soltanto nel 2006, quando grazie ad Nfl Network, la lega aggiunse una partita a scopi puramente televisivi. Hunt si trovava in ospedale e la copertura di Nfl Network non era ancora così estesa a quei tempi tanto che nel luogo dove si trovava lui il segnale non arrivava. Fu così che la figlia si sintonizzò da casa e lasciò il telefono con chiamata aperta di fianco all’apparecchio televisivo di modo che Hunt potesse ascoltare la telecronaca. Dopo 37 anni i Chiefs ospitavano un Thanksgiving Classic e il grande capo se ne stava all’ospedale. Era il 24 novembre 2006, l’avversario era Denver e i Chiefs vinsero 19 a 10 con un grande Larry Johnson. L’attesa di papà Hunt era finalmente stata ripagata.
Lamar Hunt sarebbe morto pochi giorni dopo, il 13 dicembre, lasciando come sempre in questi casi un grande vuoto. Persona che aveva fortemente amato lo sport in generale, e non solo i propri Chiefs, e che aveva contribuito alla crescita del football americano e della sua espansione a livello professionistico, Hunt era Hall of Famer nel DNA, come gli Halas, i Lombardi o i Mara. La gara dell’Arrowhead Stadium per il giorno del Ringraziamento fu l’ultima che riuscì a seguire e, come spinti da un insolito destino, i Chiefs la vinsero. Anche per lui.

First of all – I hope it does cause MLB some major angst. Their role in all of this is significant. Selig should be forced to step down. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE knew what was going on. And rather than confront it Selig and his merry band of synchophants decided to ignore it. Ignore it as Bonds heads swelled to gargantuan proportions. Clemons is a major league tool and frankly deserves what he’s about to get……:-)
