Il mese dei campioni
Gennaio ci dirà chi potrà partecipare al Super Bowl, febbraio chi sarà campione Nfl. Poco più di un mese per avere il verdetto finale che oggi appare più indecifrabile che mai. Fare i pronostici per la Nfl, lo si è detto mille volte, è peggio che giocare al Superenalotto, e la Week 17 lascia più dubbi che altro. Completato il “tabellone” Afc non resta che aspettare sabato per le Wild card, uno dei week end di solito più divertenti e impronosticabili della lega. Facile oggi parlare di Dallas per la Nfc, i Cowboys si sono levati di dosso la maledizione di dicembre, hanno chiuso la stagione in crescita, hanno rifilato due “cappotti” ad altrettanti rivali divisionali, vinto la Nfc East e spazzato via Philadelphia che, pochi giorni fa, era vista da molti come possibile regina della conference.
Dallas ora partirà all’assalto della prima vittoria ai playoff dai tempi di Troy Aikman e soci ma, soprattutto, ha le carte in regola per andare avanti. Squadra quadrata con un buon attacco ed una difesa che può dare tanto, la franchigia texana può sorprendere chiunque. Il re-match contro gli Eagles sarà però altra partita e, d’altro canto, anche Green Bay sembra oggi battezzata dagli astri come vera pretendente alla corona, con un Aaron Rodgers assolutamente fantastico e una formazione che nel complesso sta girando a mille. Si punta meno quindi su Arizona, squadra misteriosa che lo scorso anno sorprese però tutti arrivando a 12 secondi dal titolo. Kurt Warner e soci non sono in vacanza sono, anzi, squadra da temere, gruppo che vuole rifarsi della beffa subita un anno fa e che ha dimostrato di poter emergere nei momenti caldi della stagione. Riposeranno New Orleans, #1 della Nfc che pare aver già speso tutto, e Minnesota, capace di riprendersi le giuste quotazioni (e il bye) sui resti dei NY Giants.
Tornando alla Afc, le due notizie più importanti non faranno parte della post season: la prima riguarda Wes Welker, fondamentale (e fortissimo) WR dei Patriots che starà fuori sei mesi a causa di un crociato anteriore saltato in un movimento fortuito. La seconda riguarda Chris Johnson, RB dei Tennesse Titans che ha chiuso la stagione con 2006 yard corse ma vedrà i playoff dal salotto di casa vista l’eliminazione dei suoi che dopo un avvio tremendo sono riusciti a limitare i danni chiudendo 8-8. Johnson è il sesto giocatore nella storia Nfl a chiudere la stagione oltre le 2000 yard corse. Batte anche OJ Simpson, che nel 1973 ne corse 2003. Lo precedono invece Eric Dickerson (2105 nel 1984), Jamal Lewis (2066 nel 2003), Barry Sanders (2053 nel 1997) e Terrell Davis (2008 nel 1998).
New England aprirà contro Baltimore in una sfida piuttosto affascinante. L’andamento altalenante dei Ravens (così come di molte squadre abbastanza quotate nella conference) ci direbbe che i Pats partono favoriti, nonostante Welker e nonostante un record non favoloso (10-6). Molte le rimonte subire, molte le cose da mettere in riga, dalla difesa a una condizione di Tom Brady non sempre costante. Ma se Baltimore recupera il vero valore difensivo può far male. E portare a casa il colpo. L’altra wild card vedrà di fronte NY Jets e Cincinnati. I Jets sembrano ai playoff quasi per caso, un calendario che nelle ultime due sfide li ha messi di fronte a squadre arrendevoli e con la testa già al gennaio che conta, quell odelle eliminazioni dirette. Incontreranno i Bengals come è già successo stanotte, in un inedito scenario che vede ben tre sfide ripetersi tra l’ultima dio stagione regolare e le wild card. Dallas-Phila, Arizona-Green Bay e Cincinnati-NY Jets.
Anche i Bengals convincono relativamente, nonostante alcune punte altissime toccate in stagione ritengo che i loro successi dipendano soprattutto dai fallimenti di Pittsburgh, gli alti e bassi di Baltimore e, in altra division, la mancata conferma dei Titans. Tra sabato e domenica tre rivincite, quindi, con nulla di scontato e l’impossibilità che si ripetano certe batoste viste ieri. E’ ora di cominciare, si parte per i Playoff 2009, con il peso di un contratto collettivo che manca e, forse, spegnerà le luci della stagione 2011. Adesso è però tempo di giocare.
