Alabama stende Texas e vince il BCS
I Crimson Tide hanno dovuto aspettare 17 anni, ma ora l’attesa è finita, nella notte di una Pasadena che ha visto Nick Saban riconfermarsi allenatore vincente al college dopo il fallimento in Nfl e l’Heisman Trophy 2009 Mark Ingram (22/116, 2 TD) rendersi protagonista e confermare il proprio valore nel match più importante dell’anno. Nulla da fare per Texas e il quarterback Colt McCoy (uscito subito dal gioco per un infortunio che ha cambiato subito le condizioni in campo), la stagione di Aalabama aveva dato segnali di super potenza anche e soprattutto rispetto ai Longhorns, ed il Championship della BCS è servito soltanto a confermare questa sensazione.
Andiamo con ordine: Texas parte con il giusto mordente, difende bene, intercetta un fake punt di PJ Fitzgerlad (nato da un’incomprensione con la sideline) e con due field goal si porta 6-0. Al secondo drive offensivo perde però Colt McCoy placcato da Marcell Dareus su un tentativo di corsa. La partita, Texas, perdono subito un immenso protagonista. L’ingresso di Garrett Gilbert è obbligato ma è anche un rischio infinito. Il freshman quarterback ha probabilmente un buon futuro davanti a se (con 12540 detiene il record per il Texas in fatto di yard lanciate alla HS) ma ci sono troppo poco lavoro e troppa poca esperienza per uscire da una finale per il titolo NCAA.
Gilbert è in difficoltà, qualcosa gli riesce bene, ma meno ai suoi ricevitori, qualcosa malissimo, la difesa di Aalabama cresce, lo intercetta una volta, lo mette sotto pressione mentre Ingram e Trent Richardson davanti cominciano a macinare. Texas si trova a -3 con l’inerzia che appare tutta dalla sua parte. La difesa di Alabama però cresce di nuovo forza un fumble che recupera nei pressi della goal line avversaria e rimette in moto la premiata ditta Ingram-Richardson. Il primo segna il TD della sicurezza, il secondo (che chiude 19/109, 2 TD) quello del definitivo 37-21 dopo un intercetto a Gilbert. Un TD “eccessivo”, ma cercato e voluto da Saban come sigillo finale.
McCoy o no Alabama era probabilmente la squadra più forte in campo e quella che di più in stagione ha mostrato il football e i risultati migliori. Personalmente ritengo che la finale della SEC contro Florida potesse tranquillamente considerarsi il vero atto conclusivo del BCS, ma la NCAA va così, senza playoff e con tante polemiche, stavolta probabilmente zittite dalla forza della squadra vincitrice. Certo è che perdere sin da subito il vero antagonista dei favoriti Crimson Tide non ha aiutato, ma va dato merito a Texas di non aver mollato e di aver creduto nella rimonta quando le cose sembravano ormai definitivamente portate a termine. Quel shovel pass a 3 secondi dalla fine del secondo quarto, eseguito sì male, ma inutile come chiamata, ha guastato decisamente i piani di chi stava in quel momento inseguendo. Trovarsi in un secondo tempo con 12 punti in meno invece di 18 avrebbe cambiato tanto soprattutto per come si stavano mettendo le cose in campo. E’ vero però anche il contrario di tutto ciò, ossia che, forse, con soli 12 punti di vantaggio Alabama non avrebbe mollato un centimetro sul campo. Le controprove, nello sport, non esistono mai, parla il risultato del campo che ha detto Alabama e, credo, senza che nessuno possa davvero obiettare.
Appunto su Mark Ingram che diventa il solo giocatore dopo Matt Leinart di USC a vincere nello stesso anno Heisman Trophy e titolo nazionale.
Qualche dubbietto sul risultato della partita con McCoy in campo io ce l’avrei: Gilbert – poraccio – nel primo tempo ha lanciato delle autentiche schifezze, i suoi ricevitori non saranno dei fenomeni ma giocando una finale, se non ricevevano delle palle almeno sufficienti era difficilissimo prenderle…
Secondo me alla lunga Texas sarebbe riuscita ad arginare il gioco di corsa, la sua difesa è sempre stata ottima contro le corse, e chiudendo il primo tempo non così male McCoy nel secondo tempo l’avrebbe vinta questa partita. Velo pietoso sull’altro QB, beato lui che poteva permettersi di lanciare poco e niente, perchè se avessero avuto bisogno di lui in un finale concitato, campa cavallo…
Vabbè, ormai è fanta-football… e comunque sono usciti dal campo tutti quanti a testa alta, vincitori e vinti!
