Peyton Manning ha vinto il quarto titolo di MVP, il secondo consecutivo, dopo le stagioni che lo videro vincere la classifica di AP nel 2003, 2004 e, appunto, 2008. Solito discorso su questi premi individuali, fanno parte del gioco, delle statistiche, di scelte umane che si possono condividere o meno e che nell’arco della loro storia lasciano sempre qualche ingiustizia dietro di sé. Ciò non toglie che mentre la Nfl elegge sul proprio sito Tom Brady come miglior atleta della decade Manning rompe la parità con Brett Favre in fatto di MVP vinti e diventa il primo giocatore di sempre a prendersi per così tante volte questo riconoscimento (ma anche con Jim Brown e Johnny Unitas a voler essere precisi, anche se il termine MVP è riconosciuto dal 1961 e la storia è un po’ lunga).
Segno di una grande carriera, comunque la si voglia vedere, anche se come ben sappiamo sono poi i Super Bowl a fare la differenza. A parte tutte le polemiche che, eventualmente, si possono mettere in campo, ritengo questo premio meritato. Peyton Manning ha guidato i Colts sul 14-0 prima di essere messo un po’ a riposo, ha lanciato per 4500 yard (57 yard in meno del suo record personale stabilito nel 2004), 33 TD (secondo miglior punteggio insieme al 2000) e un rating rasente al 100.0 (99.9).
E’ evidente che sia molto più opinabile la classifica stilata da Nfl.com, rispetto ad un giudizio dato di anno in anno e che è comunque certamente condizionata dai titoli vinti con la squadra. Brady è il leader della franchigia più vincente del nuovo millennio, ha giocato 4 Super Bowl e ne ha vinti 3, nel 2007 fu MVP battendo tutti i record possibili e, probabilmente, la gioielleria messa in casa peserà nella storia molto di più di quanto non peseranno i numeri di Manning, il quale è ben cosciente di dover strappare un altro Vince Lombardi Trophy per poter davvero entrare nell’Olimpo degli immortali e non essere ricordato come grande e “incompleto”. Anche se nessuno potrà mai contestare la sua grandezza e la sua classe, questo titolo di MVP è solo l’ennesima conferma della stima che gli è riconosciuta e delle capacità che spesso mostra in campo. Un po’ di sangue freddo in più ai playoff e, ne sono convinto, oggi avremmo un albo d’oro decisamente diverso. Ma come detto nel post sulla finale NCAA, controprove non ne esisteranno mai e il campo ha sempre parlato più in favore di Brady, e Ben Roethlisberger, che non di Manning. E forse, anche per questo, i primi due non gli sono inferiori, anzi…
