Ci siamo. L’ultima notte della Nfl è alle porte, si chiama Super Bowl e, per qualche americano, è dopo il Thanksgiving Day la “festa” più importante d’America. L’ultima partita di scacchi sta per essere servita, re nero contro re bianco, Drew Brees contro Peyton Manning. Le regine della serata saranno Colts e Saints ma alla fine l’incoronazione sarà per una soltanto. Ed è normale che si parli di regine, di fronte abbiamo le due migliori squadre di regular season, la numero 1 della Afc contro la numero 1 della Nfc. Il Super Bowl numero 44 segnerà la storia di due squadre ed in modo definitivo traccerà la carriera di due dei migliori quarterback del decennio.
Gli Indianapolis Colts, lo scrivevo mesi fa, hanno sfruttato al meglio l’occasione, una stagione strana in Afc, senza la consistenza e la continuità di alcune tra le migliori squadre del campionato. Non potevano fallire, non lo hanno fatto ed ora tornano a giocarsi il titolo dopo averlo vinto (prima volta da quando risiedono nell’Indiana) nel 2006. Peyton Manning a sessanta minuti dal poter essere proclamato uno dei più grandi perché, visto il talento, un anello sembrava scontato, quasi obbligatorio, due farebbero la differenza e lo metterebbero in una posizione eccellente nella storia del gioco.
Di fronte i Saints, alla prima apparizione di sempre. Scherzava David Letterman l’altra sera: ci sono voluti 42 anni per New Orleans, non hanno dovuto aspettare così tanto nemmeno per i soccorsi dopo Katrina. Già, Katrina. L’anno seguente al tremendo uragano i Saints tornarono ai playoff dopo una vita e persero la finale di conference contro i Chicago Bears poi spettatori proprio del primo trionfo di Manning. Adesso molti attendono quel risarcimento che solo lo sport può dare, un risarcimento morale, una notte che sia gioia per tutti. Contro chi a New Orleans c’è nato, come Peyron, figlio di Archie ex idolo (e quarterback) proprio della città della musica e della magia nera.
Indianapolis favorita per esperienza e qualità, ma anche per la compattezza dimostrata ai playoff. Prima vittoria dopo un “bye” nell’era Manning, grande rimonta sui sorprendenti NY Jets. In altre stagioni avremmo visto Indy sciogliersi davanti alla freschezza dell’avversario, stavolta abbiamo visto salire l’intensità del gruppo, la difesa alzare il tono dello scontro, Manning tagliuzzare l’avversario con classe e disciplina.
I Saints arrivano all’evento più importante con qualche dubbio. La finale di Nfc ci ha detto che Minnesota ha giocato meglio, ha conquistato 14 primi down in più, ha potuto amministrare la gara. Ma ha perso 6 palloni e contro un attacco come quello dei Saints certe cose le paghi perché questi, di punti a tabellone, ne riescono a mettere sempre tanti. Proprio questa è l’arma di Sean Payton oggi: tenere il risultato alto, giocarsela a chi segna di più. Perché in difesa la tattica sarà la stessa di tutta la postseason: mettere le mani addosso al quarterback avversario, rischiare molte penalità ma colpirlo, intimorirlo, farsi sentire per spezzare il ritmo.
Basterà aspettare domani sera per vedere se la pressione schiaccerà New Orleans o se Brees e soci riusciranno a tenere il passo dei Colts e a giocarsela fino in fondo. Gli ultimi Super Bowl sono spesso stati combattuti e aperti sino agli ultimi minuti. La speranza degli appassionati è che, domani, non faccia eccezione. Ci si vede a Miami, dove Manning ha già vinto. In Florida non c’è bel tempo, il Super Bowl è a rischio pioggia, proprio come quella notte di tre anni fa. Saints o Colts, ormai non c’è più tempo: solo una rimarrà scritta nel libro dei vincitori.
